Special Projects Division

SPD

Continental's Special Projects Division (SPD) provides a comprehensive range of electrical services for small- to medium-size commercial and industrial customers. Whether the project involves a conveyor or pump, a new or upgraded electrical system, a tenant or server floor build out, we have all the resources required to complete it. We also operate a service fleet of more than 20 vehicles available 24/7 to meet repair and emergency needs.

Thermal Scanning

Continental's preventive and predictive maintenance programs employ infrared thermography, or thermal scanning, to locate and evaluate problems before they compromise operations. Trained union electricians employ cutting-edge imaging technology to produce and analyze images. They also perform on-the-spot repairs if necessary. Once work is completed, real-time information is available on a secure client web site — the only such web-based service in the Chicago area.

Arc Fault Surveys

Arc Flash, a sudden electrical discharge that uses the air as a conductor, usually results from accidental contact between live conductors. The release can be 5,000 degrees F or hotter, melting nearby metals and damaging electric circuits. The brightness, heat and force of the arc also can cause human injury.

Continental performs the data gathering, software calculations, and diagramming required to comply with NFPA requirements mandating warning labels and protective equipment to minimize risk of injury for employees working with or near energized electrical equipment.

Power Quality Testing

Electrical problems sometimes are caused by the quality of the electricity itself. Continental is fully equipped to perform Power Quality Testing and Recording, an invaluable means of determining whether the facility's electrical system or its incoming power is the culprit.

Energy-Efficient Lighting

Continental custom engineers energy-efficient lighting solutions for a variety of facility types, including offices, production plants, warehouses, distribution centers, parking structures, food-service, freezers, and cold-storage installations.

Structured Cabling

Continental specializes in the design, installation, certification and maintenance of network cabling infrastructure systems vital to all facets of business communication. Our full suite of cabling services provides clients with multiple options for their network cabling infrastructure. No project is too small or large for our more than 100 union C-card technicians.

Our range of services encompasses certified Category 5 through 10gig Certified Solutions; copper and/or fiber optic riser systems; horizontal and riser maintenance programs; design and build; capacity planning; demolition; wireless network solutions; in-building cellular enhancements; paging systems; cable plant analysis; troubleshooting; documentation services; and emergency response.

Constant Presence/Maintenance Agreements

Continental provides a range of constant-presence solutions to meet electrical maintenance needs. Our project management and field personnel are proficient in all aspects of maintenance, including arc-flash training. The result is an expert, safety-oriented workforce.

Preventive Maintenance

Preventive maintenance is a critical component of facility management, regardless of the building's size, age or use. Continental ensures all electrical components remain up and running, including those that power major machinery in data centers, offices, and industrial facilities. From visual and infrared inspections to data collection and analysis, we provide all the services necessary to prevent unscheduled shutdowns and ensure equipment is functioning safely, smoothly and economically.

Preventive Maintenance Scheduling

Because preventive maintenance requirements vary, Continental develops and executes customized schedules for a variety of activities, including the shut down and re-powering of electrical systems; inspection, cleaning and re-torque of buss connections, exercise breakers and switches; tightening of cable and wire terminations; and lubrication of electrical equipment.

Service Department

Continental's Service Fleet employs a bucket truck and more than 20 fully equipped vehicles to contend with a full spectrum of service needs, including general power and lighting, site and parking lot lighting, motor controls, structured cabling, security, and audio/visual.
